The Figure Workshop is the Atelier, or teaching studio, of figure and portrait sculptor Joshua Thor Diedrich, based in Kalamazoo Michigan. We focus on practical skills in the workshop, providing the high quality training in anatomy, clas*ical drawing, painting and sculpture technique, centered on an understanding of three-dimensional form. We currently host two weekly groups- a sculpture apprentices group on Mondays, and a drawing apprentices group on Tuesdays, with a regular figure drawing session and access to a nu*e model every Wednesday Students pay dues monthly and have access to studio equipment. Some students are professional artists, or current art students looking for more serious technical training than most colleges provide these days, others are retirees or serious hobbyists who come looking for an artistic community to belong to and training to take their skills to the next level. Unaffiliated students may attend the Wednesday night figure drawing session for a $12 drop-in membership for the night. Established in 2008 with two students, the studio has trained an extremely diverse group of artists from backgrounds, many ages, and starting at many skill levels.
